Both governmental and private enterprise have benefited from our increased awareness of intranet design and delivery techniques displayed in this book alone and my personal study of it. If you are not reading this book you are likely just hammering away hoping for the best.

Intranet design is a funny business, and it is not at all like web design. An intranet is not a website, nor should it be. Employees have very different expectations and demands, and an intranet should be designed with this in mind.
"Designing Intranets" is a solid read for anyone approaching or wanting to take the do-it-yourself-approach. Lots of intelligence and insight into the design process, and lots of screenshots of other intranets; plenty of food for thought and ammunition to attack the redesign of your intranet.
This is really the seminal text in the "big picture" intranet space. There are many books that handle intranet development from a "micro" aspect -- discussing information architecture, or organizational dynamics, etc. -- but this is THE book that discusses the concept of building intranets from 50,000 feet.
"Designing Intranets" really helps you get your arms around the totality of what's in front of you. From there, you can find other books to help you drill down into the nuances.
